When summer time is upon us, that means a lot of time spent outside basking in the sun, with lots of company coming over to enjoy the pool or a few barbecues before the temperatures dip again. Odds are pretty good that, whether you live on real estate in Toronto, Canada, or have a cottage along the Trent Severn Waterway, your deck was literally made for the summertime; your barbecue is on it, there's easy access to your yard, and it is a great place to go out and enjoy that patio furniture that you bought to tan in. Lazy summer afternoons are a great time to catch up on your reading (if you work doing something like Mandarin translations you can get out of the office) and to get a healthy glow at the same time!
Because summertime is when your deck will see the most activity, it is also the time that you need to be most concerned about taking care of it. All that traffic will mean that your deck could get worn out a lot quicker if you don't stay on top of everything from cleaning to painting. Here are some quick ideas about how you can make sure summer doesn't wear out your deck.
Furniture! One of the biggest causes of wear on your deck will definitely be the furniture. People can't help but drag deck chairs and tables instead of picking them up, and every time that foot is scraped along the floor it weakens your deck's finish. You can prevent unsightly scratches by placing fabric coverings on the feet of your patio furniture. You should also make sure to move that furniture around every couple of days, particularly after a spat of rainy weather; water may pool at the feet and start to cause stains, even rust!
Wood chips. If your deck is made from wood, you need to be sure that you fix any chips that may come out of railings, posts, or decking due to rough activity. As soon as the finishing on your deck is compromised the whole structure is at risk; paint will peel much more easily and it could lead to a whole new paint job. You can find wood putty to fill in any chips, and at the very least you will want to paint the exposed area right away so neighbouring pieces don't start to peel. Those with a real estate license in Toronto or elsewhere can tell you that a well maintained deck can be a great extra to any property.
Remember, high activity on your deck means an increased need for vigilant care. Stay on top of things, and that deck will be beautiful for several summers to come!
