Fall Gardening Guide

For all people who love to spend time out in their gardens, fall heralds the beginning of a long winter's wait until we can start beautifying our living spaces again. However, the season does not mean that all gardening has to come to an end. Rather, use this time to start getting ready for the following spring. Fall is a great time to do some preparatory work. so that your yard and garden are ready to spring up again once the temperatures go back up. We have prepared a short fall gardening guide to keep you busy until that first frost hits.

Flowers

Now is the time to take stock of your flower gardens and make any changes for next year. There are plenty of flowers that will bloom right up until first frost. It's a good time to add a last splash of colour to your garden by going to your local store specializing in growers supplies and taking advantage of the deals on late blooms.

You can also start to dig up any sensitive bulbs, so that you can store them for winter. Gladioli and dahlias are two commonly planted bulbs that don't like to be in the ground over the winter, but which store just fine for next year.

Lawns

It's time to haul out the big garden tools and do some post season prep work on your lawn. You should make sure to get one more mow in before the first frost, and you will also want to aerate your lawn. Also, now is a good time to re-seed any thin spots or lay sod, because cooler temperatures will mean you need less water.

If you miss the finer work that calls for the use of gardening hand tools (and that flower work wasn't quite enough) you can also take advantage of the season to get some landscaping work accomplished. With temperatures down, you will probably find that you can get a lot more done in an afternoon!
