Atmosphere

Any Toronto estate agent or elsewhere can tell you that one of the most important themes within your home is that of atmosphere. Atmosphere refers to the way a guest or a person who lives in the home feels about your living space. (And if you're going to all of the trouble of signing a longterm mortgage in Ontario, you better feel comfortable there!) You can define the atmosphere you want in your home through careful attention to different areas of your home design, whether you're going for the look of an ultramodern Bay Street condo or a British Columbia mountain cabin. Let's take a look at a couple of these areas.

Architecture: First of all, your home will be defined by the shape that the house plan takes both inside and outside. An open design gives off a sense of a home that is itself open and friendly in atmosphere, where family and friends can visit freely no matter what tasks are being done.

Rooms: Although the style and architectural touches built into your home will go a long way in designing the foundation for the atmosphere, this feel does not have to stay static throughout your house. The beauty of having several different rooms is that each one can take on its own unique atmosphere. The most obvious way to see this is within a family structure. The parents' bedroom will have a totally different feel from a teen's. And in turn bedrooms used by little ones and babies have a style all their own. Bedrooms are not the only rooms in your house that will give off a certain feel; studies, common areas, and even entrance ways are all places to enhance the feel of your home. It's amazing what a new stylish cabinet to hold baby's toys and cloth diapers can do to a space.

Exterior: Have you ever gone up a walkway to a person's front door, and known just by the way they kept their yard that a busy person lived inside? The exterior of a home can really project the atmosphere that exists on the inside. Taking good care of your lawn, garden, and patio and decorating it according to your tastes will communicate your home atmosphere to anyone coming over before they even knock on the door. This will be defined by both your personality and the neighbourhood you live in, whether it be real estate in Toronto, Canada, or a country farmhouse.

Atmosphere is what truly makes a house a home. It is defined by the tastes, styles and feelings of the people inside, and runs throughout the entire house.
