Kids' Rooms

One of the great things about designing your home is the many opportunities you get to show just what you can do with your creative thought process. Kids rooms can be one of the best opportunities, as far as getting creative goes, and here are a few things to keep in mind while you tackle that project.

Remember you'll be doing it all over again. No room in the house will see as many different makeovers as those your kids live in. Every stage of your child's life will mean new interests and new ideas of what is appropriate, so when you design that room keep in mind that the whole concept will be likely to change in a couple years, even less as your children get older!

Consult your kids! We mentioned earlier that there will be new ideas as to what is appropriate, and your older children will likely want some input on what their rooms look like. If you want to alienate them, go ahead and tell them what you are going to do with their room. If not, keep them included in the process!

Plan other rooms around your children. Again, the older your children get, the more they require in terms of personal living space. It's good to have teenager's rooms nearby a bathroom, similar to the concept that keeps the master bedroom and bathroom close together. As they grow, they will need more space in terms of vanity cabinets, hooks, racks, and so on, and not just the girls either! It's a good idea to keep older kid's rooms close to other areas they need to utilize as well.

Keep a lot of open space. Open space is important in a kid's room, particularly for elementary age children. Often parents will have two kids sharing a room, in which case a bunk bed and other space-saving furniture can really come in handy.

Other rooms in your house are probably going to be design-limited due to social conditions, but not so those of your children. You have the ability to design those rooms as you see fit, particularly with younger kids. Let your creative juices flow here while their inhabitants still let you.
