We live in a modern, consumer society, and as a result, our central Toronto condos are often filled with items we've bought. No one wants to have them all in an unsightly pile in the corner, so many years ago we started building our homes with storage - places where we could hide away items that were not in use to give our homes a cleaner, less cluttered look. Many home buyers look specifically for a home with a lot of storage, but if you're already living in a home with less storage than you need, you can change that. We'll give you some clever tips on adding storage where you need it.
In the Bedroom
Bedrooms aren't just for sleeping - they're for storing clothes and bed linens as well. Newer Edmonton homes are built with large walk-in closets, but if you live in an older home your closet is probably quite small. To remedy this, you can buy a wardrobe, bureau, or dresser to store your clothes, or another storage unit that's multi-functional. For instance, you can buy a bench with a hidden storage compartment or a buy a bed with drawers underneath. You can also simply slide your own storage totes under the bed.
In the Kitchen
It's especially important to have adequate storage in the kitchen, as food left out can become a target for insects and other pests. You can always add more cabinets above your counters or buy shelving units that will fit above your appliances, such as the fridge or microwave. If you've got one of those small waterfront condos in Toronto, you might want to buy an upright instead of chest freezer to save space, or store your freezer in another room (perhaps a basement or den).
In the Bathroom
A lot of older bathrooms don't have any storage space at all, which just doesn't work for us because our Leslieville homes are filled with creams, soaps, towels, and other toiletries that need to be put away. Pedestal sinks can be replaced or renovated to include an under-sink cabinet. You can also replace your mirror with one that has storage behind it, or add a hutch type cabinet above your toilet. If space is a big concern, try storing your large items (like towels) in a hallway closet instead.
In the Garden
Homeowners with gardens often find that they need a lot of equipment to help their natural green thumb along, and even if you're not a gardener, you probably still need somewhere to put your sports equipment. If you're in PEI luxury cottage rentals there's not much you can do, but in your own home you can equip your garage with plastic storage cupboards or build a shed in the backyard.
